What is Keratoconus?

In some people, the cornea (or the front layer of the eye) does not always stay rounded; instead, it becomes thin and cone-shaped. This condition is known as keratoconus and results in distorted vision because light that enters the eye is not properly focused. According to the American Optometric Association, initial symptoms tend to crop up as a person enters his late teen years and 20s. This condition then gradually progresses as the cornea continues to bulge outward. There is no medication available to halt the progression; however, special contact lenses can be prescribed to correct the person’s vision. These lenses are usually rigid gas permeable lenses and may need to be adjusted as the person’s eye changes over time. The earliest symptoms of keratoconus are blurred or distorted vision and extra sensitivity to light, so talk to your True Care Advantage plan eye doctor if you notice any problems.
